Debt ManagementDebt management is also known as debt counseling. It generally involves dealing with a third part debt management company. This company will then be able to act on your behalf when talking to your creditors. How Debt Management WorksThey will work with your creditors to reduce your interest rates and maybe spread out your payments over a longer period so that your monthly payments are much more manageable. Many debt management companies will then let you make one monthly payment through themselves, instead of having to make a number of different payments to all your creditors. This can simplify all you payments each month making it much less likely that you will make a late payment through forgetfulness. You also know in advance exactly how much you need each month in one payment instead of having to add up all your different bills. How Much Does it Cost?Debt management companies usually charge a small monthly fee to continue being part of their program. You may be thinking that another bill on top of those you already have is that last thing that you need. However, it is likely that the debt management company would be much more effective than you alone at reducing your interest rates and monthly payments. If you're outgoings fall substantially each month the fee could be well worth paying. Make sure, though, that you take the fees into account when you get a quote. Advantages of Debt ManagementOne major advantage of debt management over some other debt solutions is that it doesn't involve taking out another loan. Many debt consolidation firms lend you money to pay off higher interest debt. However, this loan is usually secured against your home and that puts your home at risk if you can't keep up repayments.Having a third party talk to your creditors can also be an advantage. Many people find it hard to call credit card companies and lenders that they are having problems with - it can be quite frustrating and upsetting. Having an experienced person do this for you can get you a better deal and get things sorted out much more easily. |
